Strat-O-Matic 1988 Replay Cubs Games 3-5


The Cubs travel to Montreal to play a three-game series against the Expos.

GAME 3: CHICAGO CUBS @ MONTREAL EXPOS

On the mound for the Cubs today was Calvin Schiraldi who received a no decision in 6 and 2/3 innings pitched. Schiraldi gave up 9 hits, 4 walks, 7 strikeouts and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.35. Frank Dipino came in to finish the 7th and 8th inning allowing only 2 hits, 1 strikeout, and 0 runs. Goose Gossage pitched the 9th inning and earned a save while giving up 2 hits, 1 strikeout, and 0 runs.

Damon Berryhill won the game for the Cubs today. He went 3 for 4 with a single, triple and home run driving 2 runs for the Cubs. Rafael Palmeiro was 1 for 4 with a triple.

Neal Heaton was the Expos starter and he went 6 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.50. Tim Burke pitched the last 3 innings for the Expos and gave up 3 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 3.00.

Tim Raines was 3 for 5 today with a double. Andres Galarraga went 2 for 5 and drove in the Expos only run of the game.

GAME 4: CHICAGO CUBS @ MONTREAL EXPOS

Rick Sutcliffe (1-0) earned his first win of the season. In 5 1/3 innings, Sutcliffe gave up 7 hits, 5 walks, 3 strikeouts and 4 Earned Runs for an ERA of 6.75. Les Lancaster came in and pitched the next 2 2/3 innings and gave up 1 hit, 2 walks and 0 runs. Kevin Coffman pitched the 9th inning and gave up 1 hit, 1 strikeout, and 0 runs.

The Cubs went on a tear today with 13 runs and 19 hits! Leading the way for Chicago was Ryne Sandberg who had 5 hits in 6 at-bats, 2 stolen bases, and a solo home run. Andre Dawson was 3 for 6 with a home run while driving in 4 runs. Damon Berryhill was 2 for 6 with a double and 2 RBIs.

Shawon Dunston committed an error at short today.

Floyd Youmans earned the loss today in 6 innings pitched allowing 9 hits, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts and 4 Earned Runs for an ERA of 6.00. The Expos put Joe Hesketh in to pitched the 7th and 8th inning and he allowed 3 hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 4.50. Andy McGaffigan came in to pitch the 9th and gave up 7 hits, 1 strikeout and 6 Earned Runs for an ERA of 54.00.

Dave Martinez went 4 for 5 with 4 singles and 1 RBI. Tim Raines was 1 for 3 with 2 walks and a RBI double. Mike Fitzgerald was 1 for 3 with a RBI double.

Mike Fitzgerald committed an error for the Expos.

GAME 5: CHICAGO CUBS @ MONTREAL EXPOS

Mike Bielecki (0-1) earned a loss in his first game of the season. Bielecki pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up 6 hits, 4 walks, 5 strikeout and 4 Earned Runs for an ERA of 6.75. Pat Perry came in to pitched the rest of the 6th and the 7th inning and gave up 2 hits, 1 walk, and no runs. Frank Dipino pitched the 8th inning without allowing and base runners.

Vance Law went 3 for 3 today with a double and 1 RBI. Ryne Sandberg was 1 for 4 with a triple.

Bryn Smith earned the win for the Expos today after pitched 7 innings and giving up 6 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.29. Tim Burke earned a save in 2 innings of work allowing 2 hits and striking out 2 batters.

Dave Martinez was 2 for 4 with a 2 run home run. Luis Rivera was 1 for 4 with a RBI double.

After winning two out of three games the Cubs increase their record to (4-1) while the Expos record is (1-2).
