Preflight

Before the mission begins, the competing aerodromes receive their weekly supply run. The Central Command ordered and received a new Albatros D.III along with a new pilot to fly it, Karl Friedrich Kurt Jentsch, who is ready and eager for his first flight.

Combat Report

The Central Powers launch a patrol into No Man's Land to keep air superiority.

As both sides' planes come into weapons range, Jentsch brakes to his right, and Thenur in his Nieuport turns to follow him. McCudden in his DH4 and Thenur in his Nieuport close on the Red Baron's Albatros D.V. De Guilbert is just out of range, but the other two planes fire at each other. Both planes take minor damage, and McCudden discovers he can't turn his plane to the right.

Thenur closes on Jentsch to his nine o'clock, which keeps Jentsch's machine guns out of his firing arc. Thenur takes aim at long range and fires, hitting the Albatros for minor damage.

On the other side of the battle, the other three planes close upon each other. De Guilbert takes aim at the Red Baron and fires, doing minor damage to his plane. The Red Baron doesn't let that attack go without an answer, and he fires at De Guilbert, also causing minor damage. McCudden in his DH4 fires at near point-blank range at the Red Baron, causing his Albatros to explode, instantly killing the Red Baron in only his second flight of his career.

Jentsch, seeing his friend's plane go down in flames, turns his plane toward his killers in hopes of revenge. The two Entente planes also turn towards the German plane hoping to end this patrol with their first victory. McCudden finally gets his stuck rudder working again.

With their better turn rate than the bigger Albatros, the two Nieuports get behind Jentsch's Albatros and open fire. causing minor damage, but they do damage the plane's right rudder, keeping Jentsch from turning right until he gets it fixed.

As Jentsch tries to evade his enemy's fire, De Guilbert loses ground on him and gets out of range of his machine guns. Thenur is able to keep up and sends more rounds into Jentsch's rear end, causing more damage to the Albatros.

De Guilbert reengages Jentsch and begins firing along with Thenur to cause more damage. At this point, Jentsch acknowledges his plane is too damaged to continue the dogfight and begins his escape from the battle. McCudden in his Airco DH4 is hopelessly lost on the other side of the field of battle.

Jentsch continues flying toward home with Thenur and De Guilbert continuously firing, doing damage but just missing with a kill shot. Eventually Jentsch gets away to live another day while James Thenur, Eugene De Guilbert, and James McCudden head home after winning the Entente's first battle.
