Strat-O-Matic 1988 Replay Cubs Games 6-8


The Cubs continue their road trip to St. Louis for a three-game series against the Cardinals. This is their first meeting of the season.

GAME 6: CHICAGO CUBS @ ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Greg Maddux (1-0) earns his first no-decision of the season after going eight innings and giving up 4 hits, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.12. Goose Gossage was put in to close out the game and went 1 1/3 innings surrendering 2 hits, 3 walks, and 0 runs. Les Lancaster pitched the last three innings of the game and earned loss giving up three hits.

Ryne Sandberg was 2 for 6 with a solo home run, his second home run of the season. Sandberg was also thrown out while trying to steal second.

Damon Berryhill and Darrin Jackson each committed an error for the Cubs.

Joe Magrane was the Cardinals starter and pitched eight innings for a no-decision while giving up 7 hits, 3 strikeouts and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 2.25. Ken Dayley came in to pitch the ninth inning giving up 1hit. Todd Worrell came in to pitch the next three innings and he gave up 1 hit, 2 strikeouts, and zero runs. John Costello pitched the 13th inning and earned the win while striking out one batter.

Ozzie Smith was 2 for 5 with a walk with one stolen base out of three attempts. Terry Pendleton was 1 for 4 with a RBI. Tony Pena was 0 for 4 with a sacrifice fly.

Luis Ailcea and Terry Pendleton each committed an error for the Cardinals.

GAME 7: CHICAGO CUBS @ ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Jamie Moyer (1-0) earned a no-decision in seven innings of work today. Moyer gave up five hits, three strikeouts and two earned runs for an ERA of 2.57. Pat Perry pitched the eighth inning for the Cardinals earning him the win while giving up two hits and one earned run for an ERA of 9.00.

Andre Dawson was 2 for 5 with a double and made an error in center for the Cubs. Rafael Palmeiro went 2 for 5 with a double and one earned a run.

For the Cardinals, Jose DeLeon was their starter and went seven innings for a no-decision. DeLeon gave up eight hits, two walks, four strikeouts and one earned run for an ERA of 1.29. Steve Peters pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Cardinals and earned the win while giving up two walks and striking out two batters.

Tony Pena went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Luis Alicea and Bob Horner both hit a double for their only hit in four at-bats with Horner driving in one run.

Curt Ford and Willie McGee each made an error for the Cardinals.

GAME 8: CHICAGO CUBS @ ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Calvin Schiraldi earned his second no-decision of the season in seven hours of work today. Schiraldi gave up four hits, two strikeouts, and no runs. Les Lancaster came in to pitch the eighth inning and gave up two hits, three walks, and two earned runs without getting an out. The Cubs replaced Lancaster with Frank Dipino and he closed out the inning by striking out two.

Vance Law went 2 for 4 and Shawon Dunston hit 1 for 3 for the Cubs only hits of the game.

Darry Cox earned the win today in eighth innings pitched while allowing only two hits and striking out five batters. Todd Worrell pitched the ninth inning for the Cardinals and earned the save while only giving up one hit.

Ozzie Smith hit one double in four at-bats driving in two runs. Tony Pena hit a double in three at-bats.

Curt Ford made an error in today's game, his second error of the series.

After being swept by the Cardinals the Cubs record stands at (10-13) while the Cardinals bring their record to (9-8) for the season.
