Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon Review

Blood Dragon is a first person shooter game and a stand alone expansion of Far Cry 3 made by Ubisoft Montreal and released in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC. The game's world is set in 2007, a 2007 as imagined from a 1980s action movie. If you haven't played Blood Dragon and like first person shooters and 1980s action movies then stop what you're doing and get your hands on this game.

PLOT:

The game is a video game version of an 80s action movie like Predator or the Terminator set within a 2007 "future". The games cut scenes look like they come from an 16-Bit game on the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. The story itself doesn't have a lot of depth, that's not the point of this game. It's the experience. The games music sounds is nearly note for note the different songs from the first Terminator movie and it works very well here.

After the first cut scene the game loads up with you inside a helicopter on a laser minigun blasting away at bad guys with Little Richard's Long Tall Sally playing, straight out of Predator. After that I was sold on the game and it just keeps getting better.

GAME PLAY:

If you've played Far Cry 3, the game that Blood Dragon was based upon, then you'll have no problem playing this game. If you've played first person shooters then you'll feel right at home.

In Blood Dragon as you work on the missions for the main plot there are also a number of different side jobs to do that will earn you money to upgrade your weapons and allow you to earn enough experience to level up. There are a number of bases that are under the control of the bad guys. You can go in as a one man army and kill everyone in the base which turns it into a base for the good guys. Once that happens other missions tied to the base are unlocked. There are animal hunting missions, rescue missions and assassination missions. These missions are for the most part quick and easy and lots of fun.

The world in Blood Dragon isn't too big and you can run pretty fast or drive. I love driving in Far Cry games and had tons of fun wrecking, crashing, rolling and driving my Jeep into the bottom of the ocean. Another nice feature is that in water you can swim really fast. Usually in games if you're in the water the game either kills you or you swim so slowly that it's usually simpler to kill yourself. In Blood Dragon there are boats and jet skies but you don't really need them and I had a good time in the water for a change.

CHARACTERS:

In Blood Dragon you play Sergeant Rex "Power" Colt, who is voiced by Micheal B who if you don't know this isn't the game for you as he was in two of the biggest action movies of the 80's, The Terminator and Aliens 2. I like his delivery for his lines and some of the lines are very funny, especially when referring to some video game staple like the tutorial.

PRESENTATION:

The game looks pretty cool. It's full of lasers and neon just like the movie Tron. All the music sounds like it could be found in any of the 80s action movies that we all know and love. Even the loading screen has the look like a VHS tape with someone trying to fix the tracking. The creators loved the 80s and it shows in this game.

There are references to everything in this game. One of my favorites was a mission to kill some turtles that were bothering a local base. I crawl in the sewer and I find pizza boxes all over. Of course it hits me that these are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I have to admit it made me a bit sad to kill them.

SUMMARY:

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is a great first person shooter action game. I had a blast playing it. As you level up you'll feel like you go from Bruce Willis in Die Hard to Arnold in Terminator 2. Anyone who grew up in the 80s or just likes the action movies from that era will love this game. I give Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon a 9 out of 10.
