Strat-O-Matic 1988 Replay Cubs Games 24-26


The Cubs, still on their big west coast trip, travel to see the San Deigo Padres for a three-game series. The Padres, who haven't played the Cubs this season, record stands currently at (3-9).



GAME 24 : CHICAGO CUBS @ SAN DEIGO PADRES

For the first game of this series the Cubs hand the ball to Rick Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe earned a no decision after pitching 9 innings while giving up 7 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 4 for an ERA of 1.00. Frank Dipino pitched the 10th inning giving up no runs with 1 strikeout. Next, the Cubs put in Al Nipper who pitched the 11th inning also allowing no runs and striking out 1. Goose Gossage pitched 2/3 in the 12th inning and gave up 3 hits, walking 1 and allowing 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 27.00 which earned him the loss for today.

Ryne Sandberg went 2 for 5 today with a triple. Darrin Jackson drove in 1 run while hitting 2 for 5 with a double. Vance Law was 0 for 5 with a RBI.

For the Cubs Rafael Palmeiro, Mark Grace, and Rick Sutcliffe committed errors in the field.

Ed Whiteson was the Padres started and earned a no decision after pitching 9 innings and giving up 6 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeout outs, and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 2.00. Mark Davis pitched 3 innings of relief giving up 5 hits, 2 strikeouts, and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 3.00 earning Whiteson the win today.

Benito Santiago went 2 for 6 with a RBI double. Ed Whiteson was 1 for 3 with a run batted in.


GAME 25 : CHICAGE CUBS @ SAN DEIGO PADRES

Mike Bielecki (0-2) earns his second loss of the season today. Bielecki pitched 7 innings giving up 3 Earned Runs while allowing 12 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 4 batters giving him an ERA of 3.86. Pat Perry pitched the 8th inning for the Cubs and gave up a single hit.

Ryne Sandberg was the Cubs only run producer hitting 3 for 4 with two solo home runs which gives him the current lead for the National League (not counting the Mets who have already completed their season). Mark Grace was 2 for 4 on the day with two singles.

Vance Law committed an error for the Cubs.

Andy Hawkings earns a win today for the Padres after pitching a complete game. Hawkings gave up 2 Earned Runs, 9 hits and struck out two batters for an ERA of 2.00.

Keith Moreland was 2 for 4 today with a RBI. Tony Gwynn was 2 for 5 with a RBI double. Andy Hawkings went 1 for 3 with a RBI double.

GAME 26 : CHICAGO CUBS @ SAN DIEGO PADRES

Greg Maddux (2-2) earned a no decision today after throwing 7 innings and giving up 10 hits, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 3.86. Jeff Pico came in to pitch the 8th inning and allowed no baserunners. Goose Gossage came in and pitched 2/3 of an inning in the 9th giving up 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 13.50 earning Gossage today's loss.

Shawon Dunston went 2 for 4 in today's game with a double and a solo home run. Rafael Palmeiro drove in a RBI hitting 1 for 4.

Dennis Rassmussen pitched 8 innings today for a no-decision while allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 2.25. Lance McCullers pitched the 9th in relief and earned a win while giving up 2 hits, 1 strikeout, and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 9.00.

Tony Gwynn committed an error for the Padres in today's game.

The Cubs continue to slide in the standings bringing their record to (16-22). The Padres record now stands at (6-9) after sweeping the Cubs this series.
