Let's Play 1927 World Series with Strat-O-Matic Game 2

In my first Strat game, Let's Play 1927 World Series with Strat-O-Matic Game 1, the Yankees won the first game as they did in real life. Overall the games were pretty close to the actual game.

Today we have game 2 of my reenactment of the 1927 World Series. The real game was played at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Meusel hits a sac fly to right field scoring Koenig for the first run of the game. Lazzeri makes the third out with a line out to first.

Bottom Of The First
Kiki Cuyler is walked for the Pirates first base runner. Barnhart hits a ground to first and the Yankees turn a double play. Paul Waner hits a single as well as Wright but Traynor ends the inning by lining out to third.

Top Of The Second
Joe Dugan gets a single to start the inning. Bengough lines out to second and the pitcher Pipgras lines out to third. Combs hits a RBI double and Koenig flies out to center.

Bottom Of The Second
Grantham goes down swinging to start Pirates half. Harris hits a double and Gooch lines out to second. Aldridge ends the inning by grounding out to first.

Top Of The Third
Babe Ruth fouls out for the first out. Gehrig strikes out for the second out followed by Meusel getting a single only to have Lazzeri fly out to right for the third out.

Bottom Of The Third
Top of the order with Cuyler walking for the second time this game. Barnhart flies out to center field and Paul Waner hits a double with Cuyler advancing to third. Next both Wright and Traynor ground out to short without scoring a run to end the inning.

Top Of The Fourth
Dugan leads off by grounding out to short. Bengough makes the second out by grounding out to the first baseman and Pipgras strikes out to make a quick half.

Bottom Of The Fourth
Grantham grounds out to first for the first out. Harris strikes out for the second out. Gooch gets a single and Aldridge walks but Cuyler grounds out to second before the Pirates can bring their runners in.

Top Of The Fifth
Combs leads off by striking out, Koenig grounds out to third and Ruth pops up to first and the Pirates make quick work of the Yankees.

Bottom Of The Fifth
Barnhart leads off with a single. Waner flies out to center field. Wright single leaves the Pirates with runners on first and second and one out making it their best chance yet to score a run. Pie Traynor walks to load the bases. Grantham flies out to left field and now the Pirates are down to one out left. Harris smacks one into the outfield and scored 2 RBIs to tie the game. Gooch ends the inning by flying out to center but the damage was done.

Top Of The Sixth
Lou Gehrig leads off the Yankees sixth by striking out and Meusel grounds out to second for 2 quick outs. Tony Lazzeri goes deep and the Yankees gain the lead back. Joe Dugan ends the inning by grounding out to short.

Bottom Of The Sixth

Top Of The Seventh
Bengough leads off the seventh with a double. Pipgras hits a hard line drive to second and Grantham is able to tag Bengough before he could get back to second for a double play. Combs makes the third out by lining out to first.

Top Of The Ninth
Bengough hits a single for his second hit of the game. Pipgras flies out to right for the first out. Combs gets a single giving the Yankees runners on first and second with one out. If the Pirates want to keep the game within reach they need to get some outs quick. Vic Aldridge gets Koenig to pop out to center field but it wasn't deep enough for Bengough to score. Babe Ruth makes the last out of the inning by hitting a little blooper to the pitcher.

Bottom Of The Ninth
The Pirates go into the ninth inning down 4 to 2 and decide to pull their pitcher for a pinch hitter. It pays off as Heinie Groh gets on base with a single but before the Pirates can take advantage of it Cuyler hits a grounder to short and the Yankees turn a double play. Clyde Barnhart goes down swinging to make the last out of the game.

Summary
In the end of game 2, the Yankees win 4 to 2 and extend their lead of the Strat series to 2. The real life Yankees won the second game as well with a score of 6 to 2. George Pipgras pitched 9 innings in both real life as well in my Strat game so that will help the comparison. In real life, he gave up 7 hits, 2 runs, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk with an ERA of 2.00. In Strat, Pipgras gave up 9 hits, 2 runs, 4 strikeouts and 4 walks with an ERA of 2.00. As you can see hits were close, strikeouts were only off by 2, walks off by 3 and ERA was identical.

For the Pirates 3 pitchers pitched in real life. Vic Aldridge pitched 7.1, Mike Cvengros pitched .2 innings and Joe Dawson pitched 1 but again I'm going to combine their stats to make it easier. In real life the Pirates pitching gave up 11 hits, 6 earned runs, 4 strikeouts and 4 walks with an ERA of 6.00
In Strat the Pirates pitching gave up 9 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 strikeouts and 3 walks with an ERA of 4.00. Again the hits were only off by 2, strikeouts were identical and walks were only off by 1 with a difference in ERA of 2.00. Overall I would say it's pretty close to the mark.

Game 2 was another fun game and I can't wait to see how close the two teams do in their next game compared to their real life counterparts. You can click here for Game 3.
