Let's Play 1988 World Series With Strat-O-Matic Game 1

Hello and welcome to my Strat-O-Matic replay of the 1988 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is my third World Series replay, you can click here for the 1927 World Series or here for the 2012 World Series. The 1988 World Series was a pretty good series by itself but it contained one of the most iconic home runs in baseball history when an injured Kirk Gibson came in to pinch hit with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth and hit a 2 run home run to win the game for the Dodgers.

TOP OF THE SIXTH:

Dave Parker strikes out for the first out of the sixth, that's his second strike out of the game. Mark McGwire flied out to center field for the second out. Terry Steinbach grounds out short for the third out.

BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH:

Steve Sax leads off with a ground out to first base. Franklin Stubbs gets his first hit in the Series with a single to left field. Mickey Hatcher strikes out for the second out. Mike Marshall hits a grounder to first but Mark McGwire makes an error fielding the ball allowing Marshall to get to first base safely. John Shelby hits a grounder to Carney Lansford who also makes an error. After two errors in a row by the Athletics the Dodgers have the bases loaded with two outs.  Mike Sciosia comes to the plate hope to score the Dodgers first runs of the game but flies out to left field for the third out. The Athletics still lead 2-0.

TOP OF THE SEVENTH:

Glenn Hubbard leads off the seventh inning with a walk. Walt Weiss grounds out to second, Hubbard makes it safely to second base. Dave Stewart strikes out for the second out. Carney Lansford grounds out to second for the third out of the inning.

BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH:

TOP OF THE EIGHTH:

Dave Henderson leads off with a ground out to short. Jose Canseco strikes out for the second out. Dave Parker hits a ground ball to Anderson at short for the third out.

BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH:

Steve Sax comes to the plate looking for his first hit of the Series by grounds out to short for the first out. Franklin Stubbs strikes out for the second time of the game for the second out. Mickey Hatcher hits a weak grounder to the pitcher and is thrown out for the third out. Athletics still lead the Dodgers 2-0.

TOP OF THE NINTH:

Mark McGwire leads off the ninth with a grounder to first for the first out. Terry Steinbach is walked by Bellcher. Glenn Hubbard hits a grounder to short and the Dodgers turn two to end the top half of the ninth.

BOTTOM OF THE NINTH:

The Dodgers come to the plate in the ninth, their last chance to score some runs. The Athletics have replaced Stewart with their ace closer Dennis Eckersley. First up for the Dodgers is Mike Marshall who is hit by Eckersley. John Shelby hits a single to left field. The Dodgers now have two on and no outs with Mike Sciosia coming to the plate. Sciosia lines out to second base for the second out. (At this point with the Dodgers losing in the ninth and Eckersley on the mound I felt I had to bring in Kirk Gibson to him). Out comes Hamilton and Gibson is in to pinch hit. Instead of a game winning home run he his a weak grounder to short and the Athletics turn two to end the game with a win.

SUMMARY:

In real life the Dodgers beat the Athletics 5-4 in the first game so we have a different outcome and that's fine. I'm surprised that the game came down to nearly an exact ending as the real game did with Kirk Gibson in my game grounding out into a double play instead of hitting a game winning home run but it goes to show you that in Start-O-Matic as well as in real life it sometimes comes down to nothing but luck. Come back next week for Game 2 of the 1988 World Series!
