Greg Jefferies put on a hitting display today going 4 for 5 with two triples and a home run driving in 3 runs. Wally Backman was 2 for 5 with a double and a solo home run. Mookie Wilson's only hit was a solo home run in 5 at bats. Howard Johnson was 1 for 3 with a walk and a solo home run.
John Smiley earned the loss today for the Pirates who only lasted 2 2/3 innings giving up 7 hits, 1 K, 1 BB and 4 Earned Runs for an ERA of 13.50. Dave LaPoint came in to relief Smiley and pitched 4 1/3 innings while giving up 4 hits, 2 Ks and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 4.15. Jim Gott pitched the last two innings of the game had surrendered 2 hits, 4 Ks and 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 4.50.
Andy Van Slyke went 2 for 5 and Bobby Bonilla also had 2 hits but in 4 at bats.
