I'm a big fan of anything about World War One and I found a web series on YouTube called "The Great War" that I found fascinating. What they are doing is releasing two videos a week that explain what happened on the same day exactly 100 years ago. The Battle Of The Somme started on July 1, 1916 so on July 1, 2016 they will release a video explaining what happened at the beginning of The Somme. From what I read they will release videos on Monday and Thursday each week so the content of each video will cover a few days.
I think it's a great way to learn about the war. It gives you an understanding of what was happening in a way that's much easier than just reading about it. Personally I have tons of books on the war but I'm thinking about kids in school. Being an American World War 1 wasn't as important to us as World War 2 or the Vietnam War so we don't know as much about it. This is no joke, when I was in high school the only thing I learned about WW1 was that it gave WW2 it's name. Again that's no joke, all I know about the war I learned on my own. This web series would be a good way for today's high school kids to learn about The Great War.
They are partnered with British Pathe so they have a lot of archival footage to use to better explain what happened. They also post extra videos on different topics including biographies of important people from the war. Unfortunately for me I found out about this web series almost a year after the war started so I had a bit of catching up to do. They do have summary episodes to help you get up to speed. If you're a fan of World War One or are just interested in learning about I recommend you check out their website.
