Start-O-Matic 1988 Replay Mets Games 101-104


The Pirates come to town for a four games series at Shea.

GAME 101 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets take Game 1 from the Pirates with a score of 5 to 3.

David Cone (15-3) gets the win today in 8 innings. Cone allowed 9 hits, struck out 10, walked 3 and gave up 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 3.38. Randy Meyers came in to pitch the 9th and earned a save giving up 0 hits and striking out 1 batter.

On the offensive side for the Mets Lenny Dykstra had 1 hit in 5 at bats, a 2 run home run. Mookie Wilson was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Mike Dunne earned the loss for the Pirates. He only lasted 5 1/3 innings while giving up 2 hits, striking out 1, walking 4 and surrendering 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 3.38 (Cone and Dunne had the same ERA for today's game). Jeff Robinson came in and pitched 2/3 innings of relief work giving up 1 hit, 1 strike out and 1 walk allowing 0 runs. Barry Jones was brought in to pitch in the 7th but only lasted 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits, 1 walk and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 81.00. Bob Kipper was brought in and finished the game allowing only 1 walk and 0 hits.

Barry Bonds was 2 for 5 with a 3 run home run. Sid Bream went 3 for 4 with a double.

Bobby Bonillia committed an error for the Pirates.

GAME 102 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets win Game 2 against the Pirates with a score of 5 to 1.

Bobby Ojeda (18-2) earns another win today in 8 innings pitched. He surrendered 8 hits, struck out 7 and gave up 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.12. Terry Leach pitched the 9th inning giving up 1 hit, striking out 2 and allowing 0 runs.

Lenny Dykstra for a second game in a row hits a home run, a 3 run shot for his only hit in 4 at bats. Mookie Wilson was 3 for 4 with 3 singles.

Brian Fisher earned the loss today after going 5 innings. Fisher gave up 8 hits, struck out 3, walked 1 and surrendered 5 Earned Runs for an ERA of 9.00. Jeff Robinson came in the 6th to pitch and went 2 innings giving up no hits, 1 walk and 0 runs. Barry Jones pitched the 8th and gave up 1 hit, 1 walk and 0 runs.

Bobby Bonilla was 2 for 4 with a double and driving in the Pirates only run.

GAME 103 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets win another game against the Pirates with a score of 4 to 3.

Ron Darling (4-6) earned a no decision in 8 innings. Darling gave up 7 hits, struck out 7, walked 3 and surrendered 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 3.38. Roger McDowell pitched the 9th inning and earned the win giving up 0 hits.

The Mets were seeing the ball well today hitting 3 home runs. Greg Jefferies and Darryl Strawberry each hit a solo home run for their only hits of the game. Keith Hernandez hit a 2 run home run, his only hit in 4 at bats.

John Smiley was the Pirates starter and earned a no decision in 7 innings pitched. He gave up 5 hits, struck out 4, walked 2 and allowed 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 2.57. Jim Gott pitched 1 1/3 innings and got the loss giving up 2 hits and 2 Earned Runs.

Andy Van Slyke was 2 for 4 with double and a 2 run home run. RJ Reynolds was 1 for 4 with a double.

GAME 104 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets complete the sweep with a score of 4 to 1.

Sid Fernandez (14-5) earned the win today while allowing only 3 hits in 8 innings. He struck out 5, walked 2 and gave up 1 Earned Run for an ERA of 1.12. Randy Meyers pitched the 9th and earned a save with 2 strike outs and 0 hits.

Kevin McReynolds was 1 for 4 driving in 2 runs. Keith Hernandez was 1 for 4 with a double.

Bob Walk earned the loss toady in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up 5 hits, walked 5 and allowed 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 4.76. Dave Rucker came in next to pitch and went 1 1/3 innings giving up 0 hits or runs. Bob Kipper pitched the 8th inning and also gave up 0 hits or runs.

SUMMARY:

After a four game sweep the Mets record is now (75-29) and the Pirates record drops to (1-9).
