Strat-O-Matic 1988 Replay Mets Games 67-69


The Pittsburgh Pirates play the Mets at Shea for the first time this season.

GAME 67 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets take Game 1 from the Pirates 5 to 2.

Bobby Ojeda (12-1) started for the Mets and earned yet another win. Ojeda went 7 1/3 innings allowing 10 hits, 11 Ks and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 2.45. Terry Leach earned a save after pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief and giving up 1 hit, 1K and 0 Earned Runs.

Greg Jefferies added to his home run total while scoring 2 RBIs.

Doug Drabek earned the loss after only going 3 2/3 innings. He gave up 5 hits, 3 Ks, 2 BBs and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 7.36. Jeff Robinson came in for relief and pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 K, 1 BB and 2 Earned Runs for an ERA of 7.71. Next Bob Kipper came in to pitch 1 inning and giving up 1 hit, 2 Ks and 0 Earned Runs. Jim Gott finished the game for the Pirates by pitching the 8th innings giving up 0 hits and striking out 3.

Darnell Coles was 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Mike LaValliere was 3 for 4.

Lenny Dykstra suffered an injury and will miss the next 8 games.


GAME 68 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Mets takes game 2 with a score of 8 to 7 in a 29 hit slug fest.

Dwight Gooden (9-2) earned the win today against the Pirates. In 7 2/3 innings Gooden gave up 14 hits, 7 Ks, 2 BBs and 7 Earned Runs for an ERA of 8.22. Roger McDowell came in for relief in the 8th and pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn a save. McDowell gave up 1 hit and 0 Earned Runs.

Greg Jefferies was 1 for 4 with a 3 run home run and a walk. Wally Backman went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs.

Mike Dunne earned the loss after going only 3 1/3 innings and surrendering 10 hits, 2 Ks, 2 BBs and 5 Earned Runs. Dave LaPoint pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief while giving up 4 hits, 3 Ks and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 5.79.

Bobby Bonilla was 3 for 5 with a double and a home run while driving in 4 runs. Mike LaValliere was 1 for 4 with a triple.

GAME 69 : New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are able to win Game 3 to avoid the sweep.

Sid Fernandez (8-4) earned a no decision in 5 innings pitched. He gave up 5 hits, 5 Ks, 4 BBs and 5 Earned Runs for an ERA of 9.00. Terry Leach came in to pitch the 6th and 7th inning giving up only 3 hits, 1 K, 1 BB and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 13.50. Randy Meyers came in to pitch the 8th and gave up the win earning him the loss. In 1 1/3 innings Meyers gave up 2 hits, 2 Ks, 3 BBs and 3 Earned Runs for an ERA of 20.25. Bob McClure closed the game for the Mets going 2/3 innings giving up 0 hits or runs.

Kevin McReynolds hit a 2 run home run while going 2 for 5. Darryl Strawberry went 1 for 4 with a double and driving in 2 runs.

For the Pirates Brain Fisher was on the mound and earned a no decision in 5 innings pitched. He gave up 11 hits, 2 Ks, 1 BB and 6 Earned Runs. Jeff Robinson came in to pitch 2 innings and gave up 1 hits, 1 K, 2 BBs and 0 Earned Runs. Jim Gott pitched 2 innings of relief and earned the win while giving up 1 hit, 2 Ks and 0 Earned Runs.

Andy Van Slyke had a great day at the plate going 3 for 5 with 2 triples and a home run driving in 6 of the Pirates runs. Darnell Coles went 1 for 4 with a walk and a home run driving in 2 runs.

The Mets catcher Mackey Sasser sustained a major injury and will miss the next 15 games.

The Mets continue on a tear winning two of the three against the Pirates bringing their season record to (51-18) while the Pirates record stands at (1-2).
